OPERATION HOMEFRONT SUPPORT was started by the
leadership of a U.S. Army Special Forces battalion
(Mississippi Army National Guard) deployed in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan during 2003.
The citizen soldiers of the Special Forces unit sent
emails and letters home to friends, family, coworkers,
schools, and church groups urging them to send
humanitarian aid items to the Army unit so that they
could distribute the items to Afghan schools and
civilians in the areas.
An overwhelming positive response from the people of the
United States had a direct positive impact on helping
the Special Forces soldiers achieve mission success. The
distribution of these humanitarian aid items helped our
soldiers establish critical trust and rapport between
themselves and the Afghan people. As the people in these
war torn areas strive to rebuild their way of life,
these donations helped them become more self-reliant. As
stability within these areas improves, the terrorist's
ability to operate decreases, therefore denying him
sanctuary and contributing to the security of our troops
and the United States.
Now that the unit has returned home to resume their
lives as citizens, they have continued this successful
initiative to send these needed supplies to other
deployed U.S. military forces operating in Afghanistan
and Iraq.
